Brain Bashers ...Exercise your Mind !

1) Kevin can you tell us how you started such an interesting concept
..Brainbashers ..?

Why? This is the question which answers everything. If you want to know
something, then someone, somewhere is waiting with an answer – you just have
to ask. I’d always been interested in why things were the way they were,
which started a lifelong interest of mine in science and reading in general.
It was through this interest that I was introduced to a magazine at an early
age which explained science to children, and every month they would have a
section of puzzles. Every month I’d try to solve these puzzles and the more
I did, the more I wanted to do.

At some point I thought I’d try to create a few puzzles, and built a little
collection. In 1997 the Internet was just starting to become more popular
and I thought that I’d place some of my collection online to see how much
interest there was. Over time the site has become more and more popular and
now many thousands of people visit the site, many of whom are young, just
starting their lives with the same burning question. Why?

2) It seems Math ,logic and science skills are required for most of these
puzzles, and illusions . Kev ...any thoughts about the importance for
today's youth to learn and study such subjects ?

A wide range of skills are required as we enter the world and grow older.
All of which require the use of our brains. We may not all grow up into
world leading scientists, but we all use our brains every day. The more
knowledge we have, then the more choices we have when decided how best to
solve a problem. Problem solving skills are used every day by everyone,
whether we putting a shelf up, cooking a meal, doing homework, or launching
rockets into space.

Education isn’t simply about learning everything you’ve been taught. You
have to think about the knowledge and ask as many questions as you can to
make sure it all makes sense. Our brains are remarkable things, each time we
are told something we create an entry in our memory. Doing things makes
remembering much easier. Here is an ancient Chinese proverb:

To hear is to forget.

To read is to remember.

To do it to understand.

3) Do you have a favorite movie or book ?

I read many books both fiction and non-fiction. I don’t have a favourite as
such, this depends on my mood. Sometimes I need to laugh, sometimes to
learn, sometimes to share someone’s story.

4) Illicit drugs have a negative impact on many youth . What advice might
you give a classroom of kids to prevent them from getting into trouble ?

Peer pressure is remarkable, but it works both ways. Stand firm when saying
NO, others will see this they too can say NO. Hobbies can help to keep you
out of trouble, if you’ve no time, then you’re less likely to be bored and
less likely to get into trouble.

5)I noticed an outstanding link on your site for youth called Time for
Citizenship ..how did you ever meet that
organization ?

Many years ago, a company I worked for was approached to help with this
initiative. Over the years it has grown to the world-wide site it is now.

6)Can you mention a time that faith has helped you during a
difficult time or enabled you to realize success ?

You must have faith in yourself. If you believe that you can do something,
and then try your very best, then you’ve done enough. Life isn’t about the
destination, it’s about the journey.

7) Can you tell us your hobbies or sports that you participate in during
your spare time ?

Besides running BrainBashers, I like to play badminton, which keeps me fit.
I also like games like scrabble, chess and many card games. Playing helps to
stimulate the body and mind.
